Avocado Toast: 5 Ways

Avocado toast is a classic. It’s delicious. But we can make it more delicious!

Avocado toast can be so much more interesting that just toast + avocado; check out these 5 awesome variations on the classic! | www.spachethespatula.com #recipeThis post is a little different today, because it’s not exactly a “recipe” per say. It’s a bunch of my very favorite twists on avocado toast.—avocado toast inspiration, if you will, haha.

I think? avocado toast is usually a breakfast thing (right?), but I can and have eaten it for literally every meal…breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner… It’s perfect anytime (it helps that it’s stupid easy to whip up)! I thinks it’s the creamy-crunchy combo that’s so addicting.

The basic avocado toast is tasty, but throwing on a few ingredients can make it all a bit more fun and exciting (or am I the only one that gets overly excited about food…?) Hopefully, I’m showing you guys a few new, fun, and different toppings that you may not have considered.

All of the variations start with a base of 1/2 of a small, ripe avocado smashed onto a piece of multigrain toast, sprinkled with kosher salt and freshly-ground pepper.

I think a really good multigrain bread is 100% necessary for excellent avocado toast. My personal favorite is Dave’s Killer Bread, specifically the Blues Bread. It’s crunchy and sweet and full of tons of seeds and yumminess.

lemon juice + chili flakes

creamy blue cheese + crumbled bacon

Avocado toast can be so much more interesting that just toast + avocado; check out these 5 awesome variations on the classic! | www.spachethespatula.com #recipeThis is playing off of the flavors of a Cobb salad. I like to use a really creamy blue cheese, like a good gorgonzola.

sharp cheddar + crumbled bacon

honey + sunflower seeds

Avocado toast can be so much more interesting that just toast + avocado; check out these 5 awesome variations on the classic! | www.spachethespatula.com #recipeThis is probably the strangest of the combinations, but the flavors work together so well! It’s sweet, but still savory from the avocado, and the sunflower seeds add awesome texture.

fried egg + sriracha

There’s pretty much nothing that a runny egg yolk can’t make better, and avocado toast is no exception. I also like to add a squirt of sriracha for some spice, but also sweetness (am I alone in thinking that sriracha is kinda sweet??).

Do you guys have any awesome avocado toast combos that I need to try?

YES! I am avocado toast’s #1 fan. I actually had some this morning, in fact, with sliced hard boiled eggs on top. I love the lemon juice + pepper variation, I am totally going to try it next time.
PS I like it sprinkled with Dukkah seasoning, if you have a Trader Joe’s nearby pick some up and give it a try and let me know what you think!

    • Rachael — February 9, 2015 at 11:06 am

I have had fried eggs and poached eggs on top, but never hardboiled! I need to get on that!
And Dukkah on top sounds fantastic! Totally going to go get some this week!!

I tried avocado toast once and wasn’t a fan.  My avocado was underripe, though, so I feel like I can’t REALLY say I didn’t like it.  These variations look delicious, especially the first one!  I’ll have to give avocado toasts another go!

    • Rachael — February 9, 2015 at 11:20 am

Oh yes, you definitely need to try it again with a deliciously creamy, ripe avocado, because there are few things more disgusting than a hard, underripe avocado! They don’t have the same buttery flavor.

With the lemon juice and chilli flake, try adding some fat shrimp. Something i’ve et more than my fair share of.

    • Rachael — February 9, 2015 at 11:24 am

Oh that actually sounds fantastic! And this is even coming from someone who is incredibly bizarre about liking shrimp (I am scared to death of improperly cleaned, or overcooked shrimp—guess that’s why I should always make it myself!).

I need to experiment with this ASAP

my obsession with avo toast is almost scary hahah! Avo + harissa and avo with lime, grainy dijon, and a wee bit of curry powder are my two favourite combos. Oh and avo, mint, chili flakes, and pomegranate. Oh oh and avocado and almond butter. Ok ok I’m done. And now majorly craving avo toast!!

    • Rachael — February 10, 2015 at 11:43 pm

Oh my gosh, all of those sound SOOOOO good and unique! I need to try them ALL! I’m especially intrigued by almond butter!

Nothing beats a classic avocado on toast! I definitely will be trying each version – love them ALL!

    • Rachael — February 11, 2015 at 11:42 am

I feel like it’s almost impossible to hate avocado toast (and yet somehow my boyfriend manages, lol)!

  9. charlotte — February 11, 2015 at 4:49 am

Equal part avocado smashed with chick peas! Pepper, salt and a little lemon! yum yum! I’m going to throw the sirachi on top of this now. thanks for the idea!

    • Rachael — February 11, 2015 at 11:42 am

Ooooh that sounds delicious! Like a play on one of my fave combos—avocado + hummus!

  10. Nicole — July 23, 2015 at 7:17 pm

A really simple one is avocado and cream cheese! The texture combo is subtle but the cream chesse added that extra creamy-ness. Less is more right? I can’t wait to hear what you think!

    • Rachael — July 23, 2015 at 9:16 pm

Oh my gosh, I totally have to try that! I bet that is fantastic!! I bet smoked salmon on top would be amazing with that
