Spicy-Sweet BBQ Sauce
BBQ Sauce in the middle of Winter, Rachael?!
Yep. I think I’m longing for summer… or at least sun. Winter is definitely the grey season in Seattle. It’s the time of year where it actually is exactly how everyone imagines it: drizzly, cold, and sunless. But, while the weather is less than ideal, spirits couldn’t be higher in this city. Why? 2 words: Seattle Seahawks. If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed that a very good chunk of my tweets are about the Seahawks. The big NFC championship game is this weekend (I’ll be there!), and you know you want to watch with some BBQ chicken wings or maybe sliders topped with BBQ sauce? (Or maybe the pizza that I’m posting tomorrow using this sauce? Yeah, pizza. It’s amazing. Get excited!)
Making your own BBQ sauce basically entails throwing a bunch of stuff into a pot and letting it simmer. Seriously, that’s it. It couldn’t be simpler. So why is this particular BBQ sauce different that all the others out there? Because it is perfectly sweet, tangy, spicy, and even umami. This unique BBQ sauce contains hoisin and soy sauce for a truly unique taste. It’s better than any recipe or store-bought that I’ve tried!
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp canola oil
- 1/4 large onion, chopped (1 heaping cup)
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- small pinch salt
- 2 oz double concentrated tomato paste
- 1/2 cup unfiltered apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup hoisin
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1/4 cup organic ketchup
Instructions
- In a medium pot or Dutch oven, heat the canola oil over medium-low heat. Add in the onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt. Sauté, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes, until soft and translucent.
- Add in the remainder of the ingredients and simmer over medium-low heat for 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the sauce into the container of a blender and blend until smooth. (This step is totally optional.)

What would you put this BBQ Sauce on?
P.S.- One time I made this BBQ sauce with cola and it was delicious.
